Definitions

DIABETES is a metabolic condition that disturbs the insulin level in blood which in turn gives rise to high blood sugar levels.

Diabetes are of types:

Type - 1 is a insulin dependent and
Type - 2 is non-insulin dependent.

HYPERTENSION is a condition of increased pressure of blood against the wall of the arteries.

Diabetes & High B.P. affect your eyes and whole body and may expose you to great risks and hazards under:

Diabetes, High Blood Pressure & Your Eyes

If you have Diabetes or High B.P. you are sure to have effect on your Retina, thereby giving rise to Diabetic Retinoathy (DR) or Hypertensive Retnopathy (HR). Here are some factors:

• Effect of DR & HR are silent and if discovered late, the changes are ir-repairable.
• These affects are not reversible, but can be slowed down or halted by proper care.
• DR & HR may be ONE-WAY ROAD TO BLINDNESS because damages once done are for life time.
• Modern instruments and diagnostic techniques can detect DR & HR at early stages and preventive measures can be taken.

Effective Control Without Medicines

• Eat right and balanced food. It is better to consult a Dietician for a correct meal plan.
• Take suitable excercises. These are a great help. But each person's excercise program is different.
• Choose a healthy life style with moderation in all walles of life.
• Watch your weight as it is a good indocation of health and all problems.
• Keep strees - the father of all problems - under control.
• Stop smoking as it damages your blood vessels and causes vision & heart problems.
• Limit alchohol - replace drinks with juice or low salt mineral water with a twist of a lemon.
• Avoid extra caffeine consumed thrugh the tea, coffee & chocolates.

If you are diabetic:

• Balance your glucose by eating correct carbohydrates.
• Eat less fats but plenty of fibre.
• Take special care of your foot - specially if you get any cuts or sores on foot.
• Save your eyesight by finding and treating your eye probles promptly.

Medical Care

Diabetes & High B.P. affect blood vessels. Changes in blood vessels can be easily detected early in the eyes by examination of blood vessels in retina. Diabetic and Hypertensive Retinopathy (DR & HR) may start without symptoms. It can also get worse over time. You may lose part or even all of your eyesight.

Regular eye check up is therefore, is strongly recommended for diabetic & hypertensive patients. Consult your eye surgeon and seek his advice, as to when and at what intervals retinal examination would be required.

It is advisable to keep a medical record of state of retina, once retinoathy is diagonised. Following guidelines may be useful:
